The Clarkson Cup

I wanted to make a cup that was beautiful and feminine. The classical design of the cup, with a large central bowl, is gracefully supported by a slender stem. The handles give the cup a posture of confidence and stature. Celebrate!

The sensational image of Sedna was created by Okpik Pitseolak who depicts her as a beautiful powerful young woman. Her hair sweeps around her like a lacy flower adding to the image’s complexity. On the handles are the sea mammals from Sedna’s fingers depicted by Therese Ukaliannuk. The mammals seem to be swimming upwards in an attempt to reach the surface. I added  maple leaves on the top of each handle to remind people where this magical piece originated. The stem of the cup is adorned with the ancient masks of Pootoogook Quiatsuk. The crowd of faces, resembling hockey masks, cheers with their ancient voices. At the bottom of the cup is a ring of provincial and territorial flowers that I designed to firmly ground the cup in its homeland.
